Surfing Bits: Sticking to a Grid

Posted on:22/05/08 · 0

The benefits of grid based design need no introduction.

For a recent project I created a grid in Photoshop, 900px wide (the traditional 960 wasn’t offering enough breathing space), with guides at 60px intervals. When laying out the page elements I stuck to the grid like glue, and then in the CSS, as closely as humanly possible. I used the 60px intervals to keep consistent horizontal space between similar elements, and vertically align main and footer content.

The results, I think, speak for themselves:

XHTML & CSS for Lighting Emporium

Following recent work on the Grand Idea Studio website, I again worked closely with Doc4 Design to provide XHTML & CSS for a website for Northwest Arkansas based Lighting Emporium.

Another clean and well executed design that was a pleasure to code.

Here Yesterday

A personal project, Here Yesterday is a collection of treasured photos and memories from surf related travel. The site was a finalist in the 2007 Western Australian Web Awards.

Here Yesterday Page Example

The site is designed to emulate a coffee table book, with a vertically fluid layout and one entry per page. A nifty index allows for a unique way of searching topics.

Unfortunately I rarely find the time to research and prepare new content.

Zeroing In - An Email Newsletter

Zeroin In Layout

In 2006 I was responsible for laying out an email newsletter for Western Australia’s Zero Waste campaign.

The newsletter complements the campaign web site, and features stories about recycling success stories and policy development in Western Australia. The average article is relatively long, so I chose to provide excerpts and link to full articles on the web.

I had the pleasure of working with the Campaign Monitor software to handle the delivery and monitoring of the newsletter. Zeroing In was subsequently featured in the Campaign Monitor Gallery.

Code for Grand Idea Studio

In 2007 I had the pleasure of working with US advertising and graphic design company Doc4 Design on their redesign of the web site for California based Grand Idea Studio.

Doc4 approached Finely Sliced to prepare first cut XHTML & CSS, SIFR, SWFIR and Wordpress integration for the new site.

Zero Waste Western Australia Page Layout

In late 2005 I was responsible for the design and development of the web site for Western Australia’s Zero Waste campaign, aimed at government, business and industry, and householders. The site was unveiled to an audience of over 100 at the Fremantle Maritime Museum in November 2005.

The site went on to reach the finals of the Western Australian Web Awards, held in August 2006.

The Zero Waste WA site is still the online home of the campaign in 2008, albeit slightly modified from its original design.
